Water & Spills
Standing water can warp hardwood floors and can damage the finish. Simply wipe up all spills as soon as they happen.
Hard Cleaners
Avoid oil based soaps and cleaners as they can build up leaving a film and creating a dull look to your floors. Instead, neutral pH or alcohol based cleaners developed specifically for wood floors are recommended.
Sunshine
Direct sun can discolour your hardwood floor. Close curtains and blinds or add sheer drapes to protect your floor from the intense UV rays of the sun.
Cleaning Dirt & Grit
To avoid dents, vacuum with a brush attachment — don’t use vacuums with beater bars. Dirt, grit and sand are your hardwood floor’s worst enemies. They act like sandpaper on the finish, causing scratches, dents and dulling. Place floor mats at entrances and high traffic areas to trap dirt and prevent damage.
Furniture
Lift the furniture to move it — avoid dragging. Felt contacts under the legs will help prevent scratches.
Sweeping
Only use brooms with fine, exploded ends to trap dust and grit effectively.
Vacuuming
Canister vacuums with special bare floor attachments are the surest way to get rid of all dirt and dust.
Dust Mops
Use a good dust mop one with a 12 to 18 inch cotton head and a special dust mop cleaning product safe for hardwood floors. It is advisable to spray the cleaning solution on the mop head, and not directly on the floors.
